Some helpful hints

A basic oil paint kit could include:

1 Magenta(red), 1 Primaryphtalo blue, Cadmium yellow, Titanium white, perhaps a black.  Five 37 mL tubes  can be bought in a pack for approx. $30

Extra colours could include: Yellow ochre, Ultra marine blue, Burnt sienna, perhaps a Sap or Emerald green. And  the Pebeo, Huile fine oil XL are approximately $6.50 each.

You will need Archival Oils “Lean”  which assists  with speedy drying of the first coat and increases flow and transparency. 100mL $7.20

Brushes: S&S tolemaster angle shader, 3/8, ½ wedge point

* Paint dark colours before light colours because white takes longer to dry so it may cause cracking.

* Use “lean” because it dries the paint & thins it too.

* Put a ‘wash’ on the canvas first  to give an overall cover of colour but stay within the lines.

* Mix colours to get varying shades of colour

* Clean the dirty “Lean” pot with paper towelling then it can go in the bin instead of down the sink.

* Clean brushes with Turps then dry them with gum turps or Metho.

* Painting will be touch dry in a couple of days, and ready in a week.

* It’s a good idea to work on more than 1 painting. While you wait for one layer of paint to dry on a painting then you can work on another painting.

* Paintings may have up to 3 coats of paint – each one improving and including more detail.

Canvas can be bought in a roll and glued to masonite or just buy the cheap canvas at the bargain shops.

* Beware that some of the bargain shop canvases are seconds and they may not take standard frames -  noted from Chadwick’s Fine Arts.

Have a cuppa every now and then.
